Food in the United States now travels an average of 1,200 miles before it reaches our plates.
For a variety of reasons, the local low-tech family farm has largely been replaced by distant high-tech corporate farms. There are advantages and disadvantages to this system, and opportunities for improvement.
- In this K-8 curriculum, students can explore these topics and become knowledgeable about sustainable agriculture—an ecologically sound system of food production .
- Teachers appreciate the easy-to-use lesson plans, which are aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards. There are 18 lessons for grades K-2, 13 lessons for grades 3-5, and 13 lessons for grades 6-8.
This curriculum was developed by the Liberty Prairie Conservancy with funds from the IL Department of Agriculture.
