To experience the benefits of large, connected areas of open space, drive through the Liberty Prairie Reserve—a 5,800-acre focus area in central Lake County where 3,200 acres of public and private lands are protected from further development.

  • Enjoy the variety of hiking and bicycling trails, or drive Casey and Almond Roads to see prairies, woodlands, wetlands and working farmlands, all within minutes of Grayslake, Libertyville and Gurnee. It's vintage Lake County.
  • On the Reserve's western edge is the Prairie Crossing conservation community, where many residents are engaged with the land. Water quality and other ecological features have improved because of the sound practices used to construct and maintain this residential development.
  • The Reserve is a great example of how people can work together to protect an area's scenic vistas and pastoral landscape. As of today, more than 3,200 acres of land have been protected within the Reserve, including three areas of such high quality they have been named to the Illinois Nature Preserves System.

Since our founding in 1995, we have been an advocate for the Reserve, and have led the restoration of several of its natural areas. We're pleased our first land protection agreement was within the Reserve, and we look forward to more.

The Liberty Prairie Reserve is located in central Lake County, bordered by Highway 120 on the north, Highway 137 on the west and south, and Independence Grove Forest Preserve on the east.
