We help to protect and repair native ecosystems for Libertyville Township Open Space District. Our goal is for people to enjoy the many benefits of open space including reduced flooding, cleaner air and water, species preservation, recreation and landscape views.
Science-based practices help us minimize human disturbances so that native ecosystems can thrive. This frequently calls for us to:
- Reduce soil erosion.
- Control foreign species that squeeze out native plants.
- Sow seeds of native plants.
- Return fire to the landscape in a controlled manner.
- Return water flows to their pre-settlement courses.
- Minimize damage from chemicals such as road salt and fertilizer.
- Monitor particularly rare species.
Similar to restoring an old house, these projects are sometimes lengthy and messy but, in the end, result in a fine likeness of an earlier splendor. We’ve helped the Township steward their lands since 1995.
Much of this work is not possible without the help of volunteers. Click here if you enjoy working outdoors and would like to help. All training and equipment provided.
