We help to protect the quality of life in Lake County by preserving open space and restoring natural areas. Research confirms that communities enjoy a variety of economic and environmental benefits when they balance development with open space. Because of Lake County's rapid pace of growth, our work has become more vital and urgent.
- We provide educational opportunities so that others can gain the knowledge and skills needed to join in.
- We help landowners understand the array of options and resources available for restricting or preventing property development—oftentimes in a way that lets them retain ownership and enjoy significant tax benefits.
- We assist landowners in developing science-based restoration plans that strengthen the ecological functions of natural areas.
- We help municipal and private land planners who wish to incorporate sound environmental principles into their work.
- We partner with and complement the work of public agencies that own and manage open space.
- For over ten years we've helped landowners create and manage the Liberty Prairie Reserve—a 5,800-acre focus area in central Lake County where 3,200 acres of public and private lands are protected from further development.
Our work is made possible by volunteers and our funders, who include over 400 member families and individuals, businesses, the Liberty Prairie Foundation, the Field Foundation, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, Grand Victoria and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. |
