Restoring the Future: Saving the Oak Woodlands

Join Ann Maine, Lake County Forest Preserve District President, as she updates us on several major restoration projects underway by the Lake County Forest Preserve District. Oaks are one of the main elements in the Illinois landscape. But due to invasive plants, urban development, and environmental pressures, our oaks are suffering. The LCFPD has been researching the oaks along the southern Des Plaines river to better understand the current situation, what has impacted the oaks, and what can be done to restore the vigor of the native oak landscapes. Ann will review the work that has been undertaken and discuss some of the options being considered to restore this native treasure. This is a free program by the Lake-to-Prairie Chapter of the Wild Ones.

Volunteer Restoration Workday

Do you enjoy the out-of-doors and the chance to work directly with the land? Then we've got the thing for you – our monthly workday. On the second Saturday of each month, volunteers help us steward one of two special sites owned by Libertyville Township.  These places are so ecologically valuable they're part of the Illinois Nature Preserve system. We provide tools and instruction, and volunteers help with projects such as weed control, seed collecting and planting. Trust us: it’s not too intense, and you’ll enjoy meeting other like-minded people. We meet the second Saturday of every month, 9 a.m. to noon, and alternate between Oak Openings in Grayslake and Liberty Prairie in Libertyville (directions below). Wear jeans and boots; we’ll bring gloves, water and nourishment. Rain Gardens

Homeowners in many parts of the country are catching on to rain gardens which support a variety of picturesque flowers that handle wet soil. A natural or a dug shallow depression, this garden is designed to capture and soak up storm water runoff from your roof or other impervious areas around the house such as driveways, walkways and compacted lawn areas. In addition to adding beauty to your landscape, a rain garden protects water quality because storm water runoff is one of the main sources of water pollution. This workshop is being offered by the College of Lake County to support the Liberty Prairie Conservancy's Conservation@Home Register with the College of Lake County
