Many of us are concerned about the steady decline of the natural world and the loss of open land nearby. These things affect our quality of life. The Liberty Prairie Conservancy and its hundreds of members, volunteers, and supporters work together to ensure that the beauty and health of the land is preserved and restored for the benefit of people, plants, and wildlife. We want to keep Lake County a great place to live, work, play, and raise a family. Please join us.
New Dokum Mskoda Sedge Meadow Nature Preserve in WaukeganThe Liberty Prairie Conservancy played an important role in the recent dedication of a new Illinois Nature Preserve on the west side of Waukegan. We have been working with the Fields of Cambridge Condomimium Association and other partners for over a year to give this important natural area the highest level of protection through nature preserve dedication. The 93-acre parcel is a rare site with at least 98 native plant species that provide a glimpse of what Lake County must have looked like before settlement. The Liberty Prairie Conservancy purchased an important parcel of land that made the dedication of the nature preserve possible.

We are happy to announce that we have preserved 32 acres of land through a conservation easement with a private landowner. The property is in the Liberty Prairie Reserve and will now be protected from development. The 32 acres are part of the Field family farm and are in addition to 64 acres protected by a conservation easement in 2007. Working with the Liberty Prairie Conservancy, the Field family is securing the future of this land through both preservation and stewardship including the restoration of a 31-acre prairie at the farm.
The newly preserved land adds to the 3,300 acres of protected open space in the Liberty Prairie Reserve.

Your landscape can look beautiful while supporting songbirds, butterflies, clean water, rich soil and resilient ecosystems. Our new Conservation@Home program provides free property consultations, how-to resources and certification of qualifying properties.

There are many reasons you may want to preserve your land. Perhaps the land has been in your family for generations. Maybe it’s the beauty of the land, the promise of your farmland, or the value of the habitat for wildlife. Whatever the reason, the Liberty Prairie Conservancy can help your family understand and use the many options available for land preservation.
